AUSTRALIAN GREENS SA NUCLEAR POLICYA11 Nuclear Principles The Australian Greens (SA) assert: 11.1 There is a strong link between nuclear power and nuclear weapons proliferation. 11.2 The consequences of catastrophic accidents at, or attacks on, nuclear power stations are so great that the risks are unacceptably high. 11.3 Future generations must not be burdened with high-level radioactive waste. 11.4 Nuclear power is not a safe, clean, or practical solution to reducing global greenhouse gas emissions. Goals The Australian Greens (SA) want: 11.5 To make South Australia ‘nuclear free’. 11.6 Safe, long term containment of South Australia’s existing nuclear waste. 11.7 The elimination of nuclear and depleted uranium (DU) weapons. 11.8 Safe, ecologically sustainable energy options. Measures The Australian Greens (SA) will: 11.9 Prohibit the mining of uranium in South Australia 11.10 In cases where uranium is a minor part of a multi-mineral deposit, mining will be permitted provided that:
11.11 Prohibit the processing and enrichment of uranium and thorium in South Australia. 11.12 Help communities affected by the loss of uranium mining to find alternative employment. 11.13 Prohibit the import and export of nuclear waste. 11.14 Promote the development of non-reactor technologies for the production of radioisotopes for medical and scientific purposes. 11.15 Require uranium mining companies in South Australia to immediately rehabilitate mining sites to pre-mining conditions. 11.16 Require in-situ-leach uranium mining companies in South Australia to immediately take steps to restore the quality of groundwater to pre-mining conditions. 11.17 Require uranium mining companies in South Australia to immediately take steps to meet enforceable standards for the safe storage and monitoring of their radioactive wastes in enclosed above ground facilities. 11.18 Ensure that nuclear waste generated in South Australia is safely stored and monitored above ground at or near the site of generation. 11.19 Ensure that the siting of facilities using or producing nuclear waste is subject to effective public consultation. 11.20 Promote the sale and use of non-radioactive smoke detectors. 11.21 Put a deposit on radioactive smoke detectors. 11.22 Provide for the safe, long term storage of radioactive smoke detectors. 11.23 Adopt the ECRR ionizing radiation protection standard of 5mSv per year for radiation workers and 0.1 mSv per year for the general public. 11.24 Support a national register of ionizing radiation exposures received by workers. |
